WHAT'S A TERRARIUM?

A closed terrarium, also known as a rainforest terrarium, is a tiny eco system in a sealed glass bottle. It's the perfect environment for humidity, moisture loving plants, and require very little care if made right. They work in a cycle; plants produce water vapour whilst photosynthesising, which gathers on the glass walls and trickles back into the soil, creating a cycle of constant moisture and humidity for the plants to grow and thrive in.

THE LOCATION - INDIRECT LIGHT

Your terrarium will do best in bright, indirect light. You want to avoid the inside of the glass heating up too much, so keep out of direct sunshine and away from hot radiators. They’ll cope in shadier spots for a period of time, but won’t thrive.

THE WATERING - HARDLY EVER

Your terrarium will tell you it needs watering! If the soil is very light in colour, the moss is starting to yellow, or the plants are wilting, it requires more moisture added back into the glass. Use a spray bottle/mister, just a few spritses will likely do. The most this would ever be is once a month, but could be every six months, once every couple of years, even never...

THE MAINTENANCE - YOUR CHOICE!

The plants or moss in your terrarium will grow and change over time. You can leave the plants to it and let them grow and take over the terrarium. Or, if you‘d like to keep your terrarium neat, trim the top growth of your plants when it starts reaching the top. You may also occassionally see some dead leaves, which is normal as it grows, you can trim these away if you wish too.

COMMON PROBLEMS & HOW TO FIX THEM

You've created a little eco system, and getting the balance right is key. Sometimes things go slightly wrong, but there's no need to panic...

YELLOW OR SHRIVELLED LEAVES

if you see a few crispy or yellow leaves in the first few weeks of caring for your terrarium, don't panic. They're just settling in. If there's a lot, check the soil - is it too wet, is it too dry?

CONDENSATION AND ROT

Water on the sides of the glass is normal. However, if the glass is frequently completely covered to the point where you can't see in, or you're noticing mould or rot on your plant, there may be too much water generating. Take the lid off for a few days to allow it to dry out a little and restore the balance.

MOULD AND FUNGUS

A terrarium is an ideal environment for your plant, but also for mould and fungus. If you see a mushroom or a bit of fuzzy mould this is quite normal! Just remove it so it doesn't spread. If mould happens a lot, consider if there's too much water in the terrarium.

CREEPY CRAWLIES

If you see flies buzzing around inside the glass, don't panic. Fungus Gnats are a very common non harmful plant pest, they just get into everything! Shoo them out if you see them, or if it's really bad, use a yellow sticky trap to cull numbers.
